The month of October saw the battle for the expanding e-commerce market pie touching a new intense pitch with both market leader Flipkart and challenger Amazon India coming out with scores of attractive deals for millions of consumers in the country. And at the end of the festive season, the moot question is: which of them have more reasons to smile? Has the gap narrowed between the two?
There is no conclusive evidence to suggest the precise result with both of them claiming to have significantly improved their performance this Diwali season without giving any financial details. Flipkart along with its subsidiaries Myntra and Jabong is claiming to have sold 70-80 percent more than its nearest rival in the value terms. “ The wide lead we have established during this month proves that a home-grown startup can successfully take on a 22-year global company which is pouring money to buy market share,” Flipkart CEO Binny Bansal told a financial daily.
Amazon India, on its part has reported nearly three times jump in its sales in October. Citing the report of SimilarWeb, a web analytics firm, Amazon has claimed its mobile site visits received 40 to 58 percent more visitors than Flipkart during Dussera sales. The company is also claiming that its mobile app downloads has grown in an explosive trajectory this October.
