The nearest airport to the national capital is being set up at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. Responding to a query in the upper house of the parliament recently, Minister of State for Civil Aviation informed that the ‘site clearance’ for setting up the greenfield airport at Bhiwadi has been granted. Bhiwadi which is now being seen as part of the expanding National Capital Region (NCR) will, therefore, be counted as Delhi’s second airport.
The airport at Bhiwadi is likely to have a major cargo capacity since it is in alignment with the upcoming Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project. “ The proposed airport at Bhiwadi is being set up at a very strategic point, it will be heavily used for the air transportation of perishables, pharmaceuticals and other high value products,” a senior official of DMIC had earlier told supplychainlog. Among other second metro airports projects, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has given ‘in principle’ approval to Government of Maharashtra for construction of a new airport at Navi Mumbai and development of a second airport at MoPA village in Goa.
