According to a recently published report by a news agency, Indian Port Rail Company (IPRCL), a dedicated agency to develop last-mile rail connectivity with noted ports in the country currently has 20 projects in its kitty for execution. Of these 11, projects are valued at over Rs 7600 crore for which details project reports are currently being prepared.
The company has already kicstarted modernization of rail infrastructure at the ports of Kolkata, Vizag, Chennai, Tuticorin and New Mangalore. The company is expected to take up similar projects at JNPT, Kandla and Haldia at the beginning of the next fiscal. In addition, IPRCL is now also working on a detailed project report for rail-highway connectivity near Colachel. All these projects are linked to government’s ambitious Sagarmala project which would propel port led development. One of the key objectives of the larger programme is to significantly bring down the logistics cost in the country.
