Consistent drop in domestic market share of Air India

The national carrier Air India, which is now being considered for privatization by the government, has seen consistent drop in its domestic market share since 2014 even as its  operating profit has shown improvement in the recent years. The company posted an operating profit of Rs 105 crore in 2015-16.

The falling market share is evident from a written reply submitted by Minister of State for Civil Aviation in the Lok Sabha recently which says that the domestic share of the national carrier which stood at 17.9 percent in 2014-15 dropped to 14.2 percent in 2016-17. In the stated three year period, the government had infused a staggering over Rs 10,000 crore as part of Air India’s turnaround plan.
