Sufficient goods wagons in the country

In a recent written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain informed the house that there are sufficient goods wagons in the country to meet the demand-supply requirements. Freight business is the mainstay of Indian railways accounting for over 60 percent of its annual earnings. In his reply, Gohain underlined that there are 2,58,584 different types of wagons available over Indian Railways.

In terms of zonal break-up, South Eastern Railways has highest number of wagons – 35269. South East Central Railways comes at second rank with 28119 wagons and East Central Railways comes next with 23379 wagons (demonstrated in the table below).
