In a move that is probably reflective of union government’s serious intent to significantly improve logistics regime in the country, it has appointed a special secretary level official to deal with logistics related issues. According to a report by news agency PTI, senior IAS officer Binoy Kumar took charge as Special Secretary (logistics) in the commerce ministry early this week. This post has been recently created to fill the gap of no single government department being in place to deal with logistics related issues.
“Logistics is a key component for increasing competitiveness of exporters by reducing transport cost and expedite shipments,” a senior ministry official has been quoted as saying in the report. Kumar, a 1983-batch IAS officer of the Telangana cadre, has earlier been the Director General of Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) and is credited to have played a crucial role in creation of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
