On Monday, country saw the unveiling of the first multi-modal terminal on National Waterways – 1 in Varanasi. The terminal was inaugurated by the prime minister Narendra Modi and this is first of the four terminal facilities which is being built on this stretch of waterways. The much-awaited project probably marks the beginning of new mode of transportation in the country which would deliver two key advantages – cost effective and eco-friendly.
Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that the inland water-way would save time and money, reduce congestion on roads, reduce the cost of fuel, and reduce vehicular pollution. The terminal has been built as part of the World Bank aided Jal Vikas Marg project. Referring to the arrival of the first inland container vessel in Varanasi, the Prime Minister said that Eastern Uttar Pradesh is now connected with the Bay of Bengal, through the water route.
