The leather goods industry has seen mixed trends in the exports of their produce in the recent years. According to Council for Leather Exports (CLE) recent data, the manufacturing based export of leather, leather products and footwear from India marginally increased from USD 5.65 billion in 2016-17 to USD 5.74 billion in 2017-18, growing by 1.65%. The exports showed decline of 9.84% and 3.56% in Dollar Terms during 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively.
In 2017-18, finished leather goods exports declined by 1.37 percent – from $ 886 million to $874 million. Decline was also witnessed in leather garments which dropped from $535 million to $518 million.
The decline in exports has been attributed to external factors particularly fall in demand from the European Union which consumes over 50 percent of Indian leather exports.
